Just not cricket

Warning!…………the following report contains references to other sports that some readers may find inappropriate. If you feel that you will be offended reading analogies made to other sports in an AFL report you are strongly advised to not read on….
Now that I have the warning out of the way, at times watching the game on Saturday made me feel like watching a No. 3 batsman playing against a No. 11 batsman and it’s not why you think. Yes with their vast experience Geelong always seemed to find space and get balls between the gaps whilst the Demons always seemed to hit the opposition fielder. But I make the analogy because a No. 3 batsman always seems to get the benefit of the doubt from the umpire on close calls whilst the No. 11 always seems to get fired out.
How many times on the weekend did Geelong get the 50/50 calls and the Dees got none!…..I am sick of big name players (yes Joel Selwood and Stevie Johnson I am referring to you) get soft frees that eventually cost us goals! Those that know me know that I am a ‘fair’ supporter in that I call frees (either way) when I see it and it by no means cost us the game but I was pretty fired up with some of the calls on the weekend. I have a confession……

Going to watch the game on Saturday night was sort of like being asked to have a dance with your sister……..you know you have to do it but you also know you probably won’t enjoy it.
Don’t get me wrong – it wasn’t because I thought we were going to get flogged. It was the humid/slippery conditions coupled with the defensive mindset of game styles both teams play that pretty much ensured that when they rate the spectacle of games played this year Saturday’s nights’ game would be low on the totem pole. And I was right. Read more
Connectivity in Jakarta
by Darren Spence
Sunday brought the start of the Holy month of Ramadan and with it the closure of all entertainment venues for the day (i.e – pubs). This brought with it a problem. Whilst I have access to the internet, for most private houses in Indonesia, connectivity (especially for streaming) is on a par with South Sudan so for a 10am start I had to find a business open that had sufficient streaming capabilities to watch the game.
Enter Starbucks. The Starbucks idea went pear shaped during the first quarter when people started staring at this weird guy with head phones screaming at his IPad so a new venue next door was sorted out for the 2nd quarter. Read more
Oh, Henny Penny, the sky is falling and I am going to the lion to tell him about it!
by Darren Spence
Chicken Little likes to walk in the woods. She looks at the trees. She likes to smell the flowers. She likes to listen to the birds singing. One day while she was walking an acorn falls from a tree, and hits the top of her little head. “My, oh, my, the sky is falling. I must tell the lion about it” – says Chicken Little and begins to run. She runs and runs. By and by she meets the hen. ” Where are you going?” asks the hen. “Oh, Henny Penny, the sky is falling and I am going to the lion to tell him about it”. “How do you know it?” asks Henny Penny. “It head me on the head, so it must be so” says Chicken Little. ” Let me go with you!” says Henny Penny…….run run…… Read more
