Faith in the Mighty Demons!
by Darren Spence
All the players, coaches and supporters were singing our great song for the first time in a round one game away from the ‘G since 1980 after a great win against the Saints on Saturday. I don’t know why the 2nd verse gets ignored however it would have been apt to sing ‘oh the team played fine in the year 39’ as I am pretty sure that was the last time we have beaten St. Kilda.
It didn’t look the result we were all hoping for early in the game, however, and yes, I was a little pessimistic when we were down by 4 goals and Joel Smith was off injured. In fact, at one stage I thought the Aussie Cricket team were more likely to be invited to Virat Kohli’s house for a BBQ then the Dees to break their drought!
I should have had more faith as the Mighty Demons slammed on 10 unanswered goals to end up winning comfortably by 30 points. Melbourne showed that the transition of coaches was seamless and I really enjoyed the attacking game style implemented by Goodwin. If this is a sign of things to come, then our long-suffering supporters are in for a treat this year.
Our turnaround of fortunes in the game really started with the clearances. We smashed the Saints in this area with big Maxy giving our midfield first use of the ball with players like Oliver, Lewis and Jones feasting on Gawn’s exemplary service. Oliver looks like having a break out year as he continued on with his JLT form (I still don’t know what JLT stands for BTW!) and Lewis just may end up being the recruit of the year.
Mitch Hannan had a debut to remember finishing with 16 disposals and 2 goals. Other players that impressed me were Neal-Bullen, in arguably his best game for the club, Vince, Hogan, Petracca and the under – rated (well outside the club anyway) Neville Jetta. Many players could see themselves hard done by with their exclusion from this list which really was a solid team performance and the best possible start for the year.
This Sunday we look towards our first home game against the Blues. Carlton are another team that have had the wood on us of late and it is a great opportunity for the boys to go 2 up after 2 and erase the poor performance against this mob late last year. I really don’t like Carlton….. am pumped for this game and expecting the boys to be fired up and run away with a win.

Melbourne v St Kilda – match preview
A glimpse into what NSW Demons are looking forward to in the first game of the season.
- Fearless football
- Players hit targets and hit the contest HARD – no second guessing, no tentative approaches, just playing with guts and determination to get the job done
- Big, big team effort , consolidation of Oliver, Hunt, Trac, Watts, Gawn and Brayshaw and breakthroughs by Hannan and Smith
- Defying Saints hoodoo, defying Docklands hoodoo
- Enjoying the Gawn-Viney midfield partnership develop, a bit of class from Petraca and already one of the best in heavy traffic, Clayton Oliver, ply his wares!!
- Hoping for the clarry revolution!
- The young ones stepping up and playing free flowing running football and excited about our forward line.
- Drastically reduced turnovers especially in the corridor, much better final kicks into the forward line with sharp passes to good leads.
- Thirdly the back zone not failing and letting opposition forwards running in behind the zone and taking the ball uncontested and kicking easy goals.
- Petracca-Brayshaw-Oliver-Salem all in the one team, hopefully all fit and over their respective issues. Lewis to help guide them.
- No second year blues for the likes of Hunt and forementioned.
- The red back away guernsey (?!?).
- Collective and individual improvement.
- The debutants. Viney-Stretch-Smith all sons of.
If we get all of that it will be a great game!
So join us at the Cammy to watch the game on the big screen.
See you there.

Life, the universe and the AFL Women’s comp
By Sonya Voumard
Star-struck young girls and boys were among an enthusiastic crowd of Melbourne Football Club fans who came to see Daisy Pearce talk about life, the universe and the AFL Women’s Comp last Thursday night at the Pullman Quay Grand on Sydney Harbour. Despite the classic Sydney views visible from the hotel reception room’s windows, all eyes were on Daisy as the iconic Sydney ferries sailed by ignored.
Autographs were signed and some very junior hands shaken before the humble, generous and self-possessed Melbourne Football Club’s women’s comp captain told the audience of her love for AFL as a kid growing up in the Victorian country town of Bright. Disappointment followed when she reached an age where she could no longer play in games with the boys.
The older Melbourne-born women among us sighed in recognition and regret, remembering the 1970s when girls who dared bring their Sherrin to primary school had it confiscated until the end of the day with that infuriating headmaster’s refrain: “Football’s too dangerous for girls.”
Fielding questions from magazine editor Jackie Frank and later from an engaged and responsive audience, Daisy spoke of the contrast between the more DIY-style women’s AFL – where you strap up your own ankles and even clear rubbish from the ground before you play – and the newly established professional AFL Women’s comp where physios and other assistance are all on hand.
But before we get too pleased with the progress of women’s AFL, let’s remember that unlike her AFL competition-playing male counterparts for whom it’s a full-time gig, Daisy still has a day job.
She works as a midwife at Melbourne’s Box Hill hospital, something she says she also loves and that keeps her grounded. So there’s still a fair distance to go. But to quote an old advertisement: “You’ve come a long way baby.”
