Round 11
Last week
We watched Melbourne run the game out well against Geelong but last year’s premiers were too good on the day. A number of passages of play caught my attention particularly in the last quarter when you would have expected the draining experience of Darwin to slow the players down. Goals to Davey, Green and Wonaeamirri resulted from good play emanating from the backline. The good reports from Casey on ‘golly gosh’ Gysberts were confirmed as we witnessed a great debut from young Jordan who had 26 possessions for the match. Another essential ingredient has been added to the Dees midfield mix!
This week
We welcome back Tom Scully and Jack Trengove to that midfield mix and Matthew Bate returns from injury to add to the goal kicking options in the forward line. Hard decisions are now having to be made about who misses out and this week sees Macdonald, Warnock and Wonaeamirri omitted from the team. The team selection, with Warnock missing out, is particularly interesting in the defensive matchups. Carlton’s small forwards and midfielders have been mostly responsible for their scoring but they do have a few talls and Setanta O’hAilpin, Matthew Kreuzer, Sam Jacobs and Jarrad Waite will all need to be watched close to goals!

On a hot night in Darwin
On a hot night in Darwin
On a hot humid night in Darwin the Melbourne players put in an extraordinary effort against Port to play and persist and win in energy sapping conditions. A very even performance from all the team was highlighted by the continuing good form of Davey, Jamar, Frawley, Green and Bennell. It was great to see Miller return with a bag of goals and young Jetta get involved in much of the play. Trengove again demonstrated his maturity when he and Miller made sure that the last ball up was rushed through for the winning point! We are watching the building of a remarkable young team. What a pleasure! The MFC is clearly building support in the NT. The crowd was dominated by Dees supporters and there were plenty of MFC Guernseys to be seen around the boundary fence.
Also in Darwin
Jimmy was there to support the team and to lend the support of the club to tackling key Aboriginal health issues. Aaron Davey and Liam Jurrah have joined forces with local health authorities to try to eliminate trachoma, an eye disease that can cause blindness. Aaron and Liam will be ambassadors for the initiative headed up by Professor Hugh Taylor which aims to eliminate the infectious disease prevalent only in Aboriginal communities. Currently 30 to 40,000 indigenous kids have this disease today, so it’s a pretty serious situation,” Davey said from Darwin on Saturday. “Myself, being a role model indigenous guy, I just want to help drive [the healthy lifestyle message] in the communities. It’s special to myself and Liam to know that the Melbourne footy club is really getting behind it – it means a lot.” “This is really being led by Aaron and Liam. We don’t want to impose ourselves, but rather say to them ‘what’s possible?’,” Stynes said.
Round 9
Five changes this week with Bate and Bruce out injured, Warnock rested and Johnson and Hughes omitted. Morton is in for his first game of the year after injury and Miller returns after seven weeks of penance at Casey. Wonaeamirri is promoted for this game in his hometown and his first game since 2008. Joel Macdonald and Jake Spencer have been promoted after good form with Casey. I think Jetta is a good chance to play possibly as a late change for Spencer.

Last Week.
Disappointing result on Saturday v West Coast with the burden of favouritism overwhelming the Dees yet again. The Dees tackling was well down on previous games while the Weagles tackled fiercely, shut our midfield down and limited our scoring options by denying the Dees the central corridor! Good to see young Watts return with confidence and gain 15 possessions and 5 marks 2 of which were contested. McDonald continued his good form and worked hard all game. Junior displaying those characteristics that Bailey emphasised yet again after the game ..”the importance of being able to play well every quarter, every game, against every opposition.” Expect to see a few changes this week especially with Bate and Bruce likely to be out injured. Look to see Morton and Miller return after playing the last weeks at Casey. I think we might also see Wonaeamirri promoted for this game in his hometown and Jetta rewarded for his consistently good performances over the last few weeks at Casey. Gysberts must be a chance as well. Update on Thursday!

Last week
Yet again Jimmy did us proud and didn’t the Pink Lady look fantastic last Friday night? When the game started a fascinating struggle ensued in the wet weather between the emerging Demons and the favored Bulldogs. At the end it was Footscray by 4 points but the Dees would have won over many supporters in our only Friday night game for the year.
This week
Jack Watts is in this week in the only change to a team that is putting in a highly competitive effort every week. Tom Scully starts on the ground for the first time after his 39 possession game last week. It was great to read during the week that Tom is looking forward to playing alongside Jack Trengove at the MFC for the next 10 years. The future is indeed looking good!
On Saturday against the West Coast the Dees carry the unfamiliar burden of favouritism. Will we win? I’m not sure but I am tipping the Dees. Join us at the Camelia Grove Hotel at 2.00pm this Saturday to watch the game.
