Round 7 – Dees Vs Bulldogs

Devastated to see that Mel has such a bad injury – get well soon Mel.  Meantime, no doubt you will be helping with the coaching and revving up the Demon Army. Made up a little poem and some inspirational messages for the girls who will no doubt dedicate their next win to Mel’s Knee.

Hickey One, Hickey Two – You girls know what to do!!

‘Hickeys don’t finish second’, says Pop

Hickey one, Hickey two
See the big sticks bang it through;

Hickey three, Hickey four
Put those Bulldogs on the floor;

Hickey five, Hickey six
Our girls have got all the tricks

Hickey seven, Hickey eight
Jump them early – shut the gate!

Hickey nine, Hickey ten
Fast and ruthless like our men

Etc………

Go Hickey’s Go!!!!

‘Cos Hickey’s don’t come second!!!

Hope you can get it in front of the girls to inspire them in our Round 7 match against the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs crowd will be roaring at Whitten Oval, but we can just pretend for the day that they are all barracking for the Dees.

Best wishes to all at W-Dees from Jacqui Parry, Merlin and Sugar
Proud Guernsey Sponsor of Max Gawn No. 11

May the Beard Grow Long and the Hammies stay Strong – cos’ we are goin’ to the Big Dance this year!!!!!!!!!!!!

Through The Looking Glass (Alice Isn’t Good to the Dees)

Welcome to the alternative world where the exact opposite of what was supposed to happen, happens. After the close call in Perth last week, we were expecting our Girls to dominate the winless Pies in Alice Springs. Unfortunately, just like in Alice’s world, everything was in reverse.

AFLW Dees v Magpies review from Arm Chair Member – Liam Chambers

The first quarter started well for Melbourne as our defence soaked up the ferocious pressure that Collingwood piled on in search of the opening goal. Meg Downie took some splendid marks to deny the Pies a foothold, though they also managed to miss a few chances to take the lead. When we finally got into Collingwood’s half we made it count. Kate Hore kicked a lovely goal to put the Demons on the scoreboard after some aggressive tackling within the Pies 50m area.

We kept up the pressure and Shelley Scott kicked wide for a minor score. Shelley was having an off day as she then kicked another one wide before the Bean Counter Elise O’Dea slotted home a second for the Dees. A fumble by Downie was rescued & a brilliant kick to Scott was beautifully marked. Unfortunately, the ensuing kick went wide just before the siren sounded. Like last week we missed a chance to go 3 up at quarter time.

The adverse publicity for the Magpie’s Coach during the week seemed to have a motivating effect on the team & they came out blazing at the start of the second quarter. Despite some brilliant marking by our defence, Collingwood were obviously upping the ante & their kicking & marking was now matching their aggressive tackling from the first 15 minutes.

Bonnoci was very influential for the Pies but it was the combination of Bernardi & Hope that sealed Melbourne’s fate. Hope kicked to Bernardi who marked and scored the Pie’s first. Then a kick was tapped down to Hope who swung around to slot the ball between the main uprights. A free kick to Lambert in the last minute saw her kicked to an unmarked Bernardi with loads of space 25 metres from goal. Bernardi held it and kicked it to Hope just in front of goal. Hope slotted home her second from point blank range to round out the second quarter.

Still plenty of time for the Demons to recover but Hope (again) kicks beautifully to an unmarked Edwards who walks the ball into an open goal. The Magpies had there tails up then and when Guest chipped it in after some great play from Hope & Bernardi, it was starting to look like that reverse Alice world was going to continue on for the rest of the game.

We needed our Girls to step up, especially with the news that Katherine Smith was taken off with concussion & would not return. Up pops Mifsud to give the Melbourne faithful something to cheer about after a great effort in front of goal. We managed another point but the three quarter time score was 40 to 23 in favour of Collingwood.

We needed to play out of our skin in the fourth term to pull off a spectacular win from behind. Unfortunately there was to be no fairy tale ending as Chiocci kicked beautifully from 40 metres out to break the Dees hearts. Bianca Jakobsson could only look up as the ball soared over her head and bounce into goal as she ran in fruitless pursuit.

Ever the motivational Captain the heroic Daisy Pearce rugby tackled Barden, who was then inexplicably given a free kick. I may be only a simple minded Irishman who has been following AFL for less than four years but can someone please explain that ruling to me? Anyway, Barden subsequently scored from the dubious free & it was Goodnight Vienna.

Obviously the Gods of AFL decided that Melbourne hadn’t suffered enough in Alice Springs because a free kick was awarded to Kuys for what was deemed a Cat Phillips throw in the last minutes. In the end, despite some valiant efforts from the Dees, we were unable to get a consolation goal from our trip to a town called Alice.

The stats tell the story for Melbourne unfortunately. Daisy could only manage 9 disposals; well down on her previous games while Meg Downie played well in the first quarter & the start of the second, she couldn’t maintain her effort. Elise O’Dea with 19 disposals & Karen Paxman with 18 were unable to motivate the Demons to the work rate required to defeat the fired up Pies.

Much as I hate to criticise our beloved Melbourne, they’re not playing with the same intensity in each quarter. However we’re still growing as a team & there are positives to take away from this loss.

We play the Lions next week back home in Melbourne. I know we will be fired up but we have to really want to win it. I feel that we let Collingwood off the hook this week after a very promising first quarter. With such an array of talent in our side there is no reason we can’t be in the Grand Finals. We just need to rediscover the side that demolished the Crows in Round 2.
Go the Dees!!!

MELBOURNE 2.2- 2.2- 3.4- 3.6 (24)
COLLINGWOOD 0.0- 3.2- 6.4- 9.4 (58)
GOALS
Melbourne: Hore, Mifsud, O’Dea
Collingwood: Hope 2, Edwards 2, Bernardi, Barden, Chiocci, Hutchins, Kuys

Melbourne vs Fremantle – Down to the Wire

AFLW Dees v Freo review from our newly recruited Arm Chair Member – Liam Chambers

————————————————————

 Liam Chambers
————————————————————
Down to the wire – it was supposed to be the Demons Day which would have seen us perched on top the AFLW ladder, being the only team to win their first three games. Unfortunately, the day was upset by a talented debutant called Emily McGuire & some inspired play by Freo defender Ebony Antonio.

That said our players show heaps of character and can take away many pluses from their inspired fightback when they looked down & out.

The first quarter was all the Demons, keeping the Dockers scoreless with Cunningham kicking the only goal of the opener. Her star performance from last week didn’t translate as well to Perth. She was unable to mark as effectively with her kicking perhaps showing the pressure of expectation. Some wayward shots at goal from Katherine Smith and Jasmine Grierson were opportunities lost (six scoring shots to nil), for Melbourne to seal the win in the first 15 minutes.

Though Daisy Pearce (23 possessions for the game) led like the great Captain she is, the Dees midfield didn’t fire in the second quarter. Fremantle’s Kara Donnellan (18 possessions) dragged her side back into the game and the Dockers took a one-point lead into half-time after Ebony Antonio launched a near-50m stunner to add to McGuire’s first goal. The highlight for Demon’s fans was when Daisy’s fended off the Docker’s Mascall with a classic Dustin Martin inspired “don’t argue” as she steamed towards the 50m line. It was a scoreless quarter for Melbourne though.

It looked very grim for the Dees midway through the 3rd quarter as Freo surged to a 13-point lead with two successive goals. However, Melbourne show their true fighting spirit with goals from Cunningham, Newman & Paxman to deliver a 6-point lead to our Girls. Newman’s goal in particular show the how great the Demons can play as a team when Cranston swooped, took a bounce and kicked the ball long, allowing Newman to chase & soccer kick it between the main uprights.

Fremantle kicked the first goal of the final quarter to level the scores & the Dee’s misery was compounded when McGuire kicked her second to make it 36 to 30 in the Docker’s favor. Melbourne then kicked a messy behind & the away fans were on the edge of their seats when an inspired bit of play in the last-minute saw Elise O’Dea take a mark 30 metres from goal. However, the resultant kick was wide and the siren sounded shortly afterwards.

There are many positives to take away from our trip to Perth and it will stand our players in good stead when they travel to Alice Springs next weekend to take on the winless Magpies.

Cat Phillip’s ankle injury is a concern but we wish her a speedy recovery & hope to see her in the Alice on Saturday.

First quarter: Melbourne 1.5 (11) to Fremantle 0.0 (0)
Second quarter: Fremantle 2.0 (12) to Melbourne 1.5 (11)
Third quarter: Melbourne 4.6 (30) to Fremantle 4.0 (24)
Final quarter: Fremantle 6.0 (36) d Melbourne 4.7 (31)

AFLW – be brave – they were and they won.
————————————————————

All Melbourne fans will be delighting in the emergence of the AFLW Dees. Targeted recruiting has topped off a team that went so well and so close last year. There are no gaps in a team that is playing exciting football. Each game has brought different players to the fore and highlighted the depth of skill and commitment of the team.

The first game v GWS saw the Dees start with an exploration of the game plan before dominating in the 2nd half. Be brave said coach Mick Stinear. They were and they won. D Pearce and Cranston were brilliant and were named in the AFLW team of the week as were three other Demons – Downie, Hoare and O’Dea.

Celebrating the win over GWS

The 2nd game v Adelaide saw two of the aforementioned recruits – Jakobsson and Cunningham excelled along with Paxman, O’Dea and D Pearce. The match was highlighted by the Dees tackling pressure, their skilled movement of the ball and the multiple avenues to goal.

Recap Round 2 with Emma Race

Now we look forward to the 3rd game today v Fremantle where continuing to play bravely will deliver results and richly reward the AFLW Dees.

AFLX – The “best worst premiership trophy ever”
————————————————————

Too quickly here we are again in breathless anticipation of a successful season – and how better than to start with a premiership in week one of AFLX! The “best worst premiership trophy ever” is an apt description of an eagerly sought and received piece of silverware as you can see here

So what is to come in season 2018? Glimpses were certainly on show by the Dees in the AFLX games played – a sort of half court training drill. And for us interstaters any vision of the players training is welcome!

AFLW – Melbourne v Fremantle on the Big Screen Sunday at 6.30 pm

Join the NSW Demons to watch the Dees take on the Freo on the Big Screen at the Cammy Hotel.

Is it humanly possible for MFC supporters to hold your breath for 40 minutes?

by Darren Spence

……I think I did on Sunday! After being 40 points up half way through the 2nd and then the Saints got back to within a goal it wasn’t until Hannan popped up and kicked 2 in a minute that I was finally able to breathe a sigh of relief as the Mighty Dees enhanced their finals prospects with a 22 point win on the weekend.

Following Melbourne has never been easy….  We just don’t have many days where you can sit back and watch us demolish another side. Right now, however, you won’t hear me complain as we find ourselves in unfamiliar territory of being on the verge of playing finals for the first time in over a decade.

To get to this position a win against fellow finals aspirant in St. Kilda was paramount and the initial onslaught in the first quarter and half showed the football world that we belong playing in September.

Jones was fantastic with 35 possessions. It’s no surprise we had a dip in form over the 6 weeks he was out injured – he is so vital to our side. Lewis also showed how valuable he is to our team with 25 important touches and I don’t need to tell you how many Oliver had! It was fantastic to see Brayshaw back and playing well. After a solid hit early, which could have proven disastrous, the club would have been ecstatic with his game ending up with the ball 26 times.

I was very impressed with some of the players that don’t seem to get the credit they deserve at times for their respective games on Sunday. Harmes with 3 early goals set the boys alight, Hannan with 2 in a minute, book-ended nicely to seal the game and Pedersen had probably his best game in his AFL career with 26 touches, 8 marks and 2 goals.

You can’t win a game with 8-10 players and we need each and every one of the side playing their roles and these guys did this and more and were all match winners on the day. To be honest there appear to be some tired boys at the moment, they are a young team that plays a taxing game of footy, but to dig deep when it was needed most was ultra impressive and I was a happy man Sunday.

Another early Sunday game beckons this weekend against the Lions. They are in good form at the moment and with a full compliment of players they will be a tough side to beat – tougher than I think many are giving them credit for.  These are games that we have lost in the past….it won’t happen this weekend!

Go Dees

Up there James Harmes!

How good was it to see James dominate the first quarter kicking three goals and taking a spectacular mark and then combine with 21 disposals and 6 marks for a great four quarter performance. Congratulations James on a superb game!

The mark has been nominated for Mark of the Year and you can see it here https://markoftheyear.afl/vote/round/21
